Liverpool Football Club Data Science Analytics in Action
Liverpool is on a tear having conceded 7 fewer goals than any other Premier League team and this success is being attributed to their data science department.
The club’s sporting director Michael Edwards is a former analyst and believes in data, he has the support of their club’s manager, Jürgen Klopp as he used the analytical results for top-level decision making.
Rounding up their top executive team is their director of the research division Ian Graham who holds a doctorate in theoretical physics and crunches numbers for player evaluation.
The team has not disclosed how they are using data but uses a strategy popularly called as “pitch control” which means to e able to control and utilize the pitch based on the best analytical suggestions.
