Maria Sharapova’s Ranking is in Danger with Serena Williams Seemingly Back in Form After Winning the 2007 Australian Open
Serena Williams is a dominating women’s tennis player who have won seven titles and adding her eight one after winning the Australian Open 2007. She had a terrific performance winning against Maria Sharapova on a score of 6-1, 6-2.
World Ranking and the Turnaround
Serena Williams had a horrible season after winning the Australian Open in 2005 primary because of her injuries. Her ranking fell to as low as 140 in 2006 and entered the 2007 Australian Open with a rank of 81. Just two weeks after staying in the 81st slot, she has climbed to number 14 and making her only the second unseeded women to have won the Australian Open.
Yetunde Price
Her win was dedicated to her half-sister Yutende Price who was shot and died in 2003. Serena says (found in ESPN): Most of all I would like to dedicate this win to my sister, who’s not here. Her name is Yetunde. I just love her so much, I’ll try not to get teary-eyed but I said a couple of days ago, if I win this it’s going to be for her. So thanks Tunde.
Maria Sharapova and Her Difficulties
Without taking away the achievements of Maria Sharapova, the absence of Serena Williams for more than a year due to injuries has helped Sharapova claim the top world ranking. The resurgence of Serena Williams might make it difficult for Maria to hold on to the world’s number one ranking.
Serena Williams has proven that with a fit and healthy body she can win titles in a convincing matter anew. The game against Sharapova in the Australian Open is a strong and clear indication how tough it would be to win a grand slam title. Eyes would be on Sharapova to show she deserves all her past titles even when Serena was out.
Long Battle
We are going to see a tough, competitive and exciting tennis this season especially when Williams is back and Sharapova has matured already.
